We’re being confounded by the issues.
The press, run by giant corporations by the way, wants you to believe the problems facing the United States are complicated. From the mass media we hear that we are a nation divided by a complex range of issues which they then fire at us like bullets from an Uzi, in a constant stream. We buy into this and define our stand on an issue by issue by issue basis. All you need do is take a look at your Facebook “newsfeed” to see this process at work. Over and over and over again we express our position on everything from same-sex marriage to health care rights to the environment to Julian Assange.
In truth, the problem facing the United States is fairly simple and all these issues are being thrown at us to keep us off balance, to keep us so busy in futile efforts to save each and every tree that we end up losing the entire forest. We know this, but we keep forgetting.
Yes, the United States is divided–between those who think everything we the people do should be to serve corporate wealth and those who believe that feeding the business sector shouldn’t be our only purpose.
Financial gain doesn’t have to be the motive behind our every action; we have more depth than that as a people. We are not Ferengi who live only to follow the Rules of Acquisition, which give license to even cheat and steal so long as gold-pressed latinum is being amassed.
We sit across the table, however, from those who would use the Ferengi as role models, from those who just want the rest of us to get out of their way so they can sell-off the world’s resources for short term profit. These are people who rig elections with piles of money that we can’t match and who then spend more piles of money attempting to buy lobby the few good people who somehow get elected anyway. Their view of humanity is one sided and based only on the creation of wealth for oneself; all other aspects of life are mere illusion.
On the other side are those of us who believe that our society should be concerned with more than the making of a buck. We are not anti-business, although we’re usually painted with that brush. We believe, however, that the fruits of business shouldn’t go solely to the owners and investors. Nor do we think that every social interaction should be considered a business transaction defined by a price tag, take health care, the performing arts or housing the homeless as examples.
Supporting our side are some of the most brilliant people on the planet, including the most educated economists and captains of industry and wealth. On their side are bankers, lawyers, investment brokers and corporate CEOs who stand to see their piece of the pie reduced somewhat if the people are given healthcare, if the poor are clothed and fed, if our children are educated and if we quit letting the likes of Monsanto patent the foods that our species has eaten since the dawn of time.
Our country’s move in the direction of starving the poor in order to feed the rich is in direct counterpoint to the direction nearly all other developed nations are taking. The time has passed when our fat cats can point to these other nations, with their poor starving masses serving feudal lords, as examples of why America, with a large and prosperous middle class, is the best.These countries are democracies now and have already passed us to move boldly to the future while we in the United States are reinventing feudalism for the post modern age.
Forget the individual issues; this is what we need to overcome. Shove all the issues they throw at us aside and focus on the big picture. Do we want this to be a country that exists narrowly for the enrichment of business and finance or do we have more expansive view?
